How Much Water Does Your Household Actually Use?
The one gallon per person per day figure covers drinking and minimal sanitation. Here is what your household really needs, counting flushing, dishes, cooking and pets.
The formula
daily need = people x gallons per person per day, plus 0.5 per dog and 0.0625 per cat
What it assumes
- Drinking and cooking only: 0.75 gallons per person per day.
- Drinking, cooking and basic hygiene: 1 gallon. This is the published CDC figure.
- Hot climate, illness or heavy work: 1.5 gallons.
- Normal use with no rationing: 3 gallons, counting flushing, showers and dishes.
- Dogs 0.5 gallons per day, cats one sixteenth of a gallon. Both scale with heat.

One gallon per person per day is the figure every preparedness guide gives, and it is correct for what it describes. It describes less than most people assume.
That gallon is drinking water plus minimal sanitation. Roughly half of it is what you drink. The rest is a small allowance for brushing your teeth and washing your hands. It is a survival floor designed to keep people alive through the first 72 hours after a disaster.
It is not a household planning figure, and using it as one is the most common reason a two-week supply runs out on day five.
What the gallon leaves out
No shower. No toilet flush, which on an older fixture runs up to 3.5 gallons a pull. No dishwashing. No pot of pasta you drain into the sink. No laundry, no rinsing a cut, no cleaning up after a sick child.
And no animals. A medium dog drinks around half a gallon a day and more in heat.
The agencies are not hiding this. CDC calls for extra water for pregnant women, sick people, pets and hot climates. Ready.gov states plainly that in very hot temperatures water needs can double. The official guidance already tells you the number moves. What almost nobody does is move it.
Four honest profiles
Drinking and cooking only, 0.75 gallons. No washing, no flushing. Survivable for a short stretch and genuinely unpleasant past a few days. This is the number for a bug-out bag, not a house.
Drinking, cooking and basic hygiene, 1 gallon. The published figure. Hands and teeth get washed, nothing else does.
Hot climate, illness or heavy physical work, 1.5 gallons. Heat, fever, pregnancy and hard work all push the drinking half up before they touch anything else.
Normal use with no rationing, 3 gallons. Flushing when you need to, washing dishes, a sponge bath. Not luxury, just not thinking about it constantly. This is where most households actually land in the first two days of an outage, before anyone decides to start conserving.
The gap between one and three is where preparedness plans quietly fail. Someone stores fourteen gallons for two people, believes they have a week, and discovers on day three they have been drawing it down three times faster than the label promised.
Which one to plan against
Both, honestly, and that is not a dodge.
Plan your storage target against the higher number, because the first day or two of any interruption happens before anyone has adjusted their habits. People do not start rationing until they notice there is a reason to.
Plan your survival floor against the lower one, because that tells you the worst case your supply can stretch to if the interruption runs long.
The distance between those two answers is your actual margin, and knowing it in advance is more useful than either number alone.
Heat changes it more than people expect
Ready.gov says water needs can double in very hot temperatures, and that is the single largest modifier on this page. A household that is comfortable on 1 gallon per person in October needs 2 in a July power outage with no air conditioning.
Illness moves it the same direction and faster. Vomiting or diarrhea can consume a startling volume, and those are common enough during a water emergency that planning as though nobody gets sick is optimistic.
Pets count
A dog needs roughly half a gallon a day, more if it is large or hot. A cat needs about a sixteenth of a gallon, which sounds negligible until you multiply by fourteen days.
Neither shows up in the standard guidance, and both show up in your actual house.
Use the number, not the rule
Put in your household, pick the profile that matches how you would actually live, and the tool returns gallons per day. That number is the denominator for everything else on this site. Days of water left is nothing more than what you have divided by what you use, and getting the denominator wrong is what makes the whole calculation comfortable and useless.
