How to Purify Water at Home

Five methods that work, and the thing each one fails at. Boiling, bleach, pool shock, filters and distillation, with the numbers and where they came from.

Five methods reliably make questionable water safe to drink. Boiling, chemical disinfection, filtration, distillation, and ultraviolet light. Every one of them works, and every one of them fails at something different.

That last part is what almost nobody tells you. Most guides list the methods as if picking between them were a matter of convenience. It isn’t. Boiling will not remove lead. A hiking filter will not stop a virus. Choosing wrong doesn’t feel like anything at the time, which is the problem.

Start by asking what’s in the water

Treatment is not one job. It’s four, and no single method covers all four.

Living things. Bacteria like E. coli, viruses like norovirus and hepatitis A, and protozoa like giardia and cryptosporidium. This is the category most emergencies involve, and it’s the one most methods handle well.

Chemicals. Fuel, solvents, pesticides, industrial runoff. Almost nothing on this list removes them, and two methods make them worse.

Heavy metals. Lead from old plumbing, arsenic in some groundwater. Boiling concentrates these rather than removing them.

Sediment and cloudiness. Not dangerous by itself, but it shields microorganisms from chemical disinfection and clogs filters fast.

If your tap has gone off during a main break or a storm, you’re almost certainly dealing with the first category and possibly the fourth. If floodwater has reached your well, or a tanker has overturned upstream, you may be dealing with all four, and at that point the honest answer is to use stored or bottled water instead.

Four of the five methods handle living things. Only one handles chemicals, and knowing which category you are treating for decides everything downstream.

Boiling

The most reliable method for anything alive, and the one that needs no supplies you don’t already own. A rolling boil kills bacteria, viruses and protozoa across the board.

What it does not do is remove anything dissolved. Chemicals stay. Lead stays. Salt stays. Because you’re driving off water as steam, boiling actually raises the concentration of what’s left behind. Water contaminated with anything other than pathogens comes out of the pot worse than it went in.

Boil time depends on your elevation, because water boils cooler as you climb and cooler water needs longer to do the same work. Most guidance stops at “one minute, three above 6,500 feet,” which is a fine rule and a poor answer if you live at 7,900 feet.

Chemical disinfection

Unscented household bleach is the standard answer, and it works on bacteria and viruses. It’s less effective against cryptosporidium, which is chlorine-tolerant and a genuine gap in this method.

Dosing depends on three things: how much water you’re treating, the concentration of the bleach, and whether the water is clear or cloudy. Cloudy water needs roughly double, because suspended particles physically shield microorganisms from contact. Getting this wrong in either direction matters. Too little doesn’t disinfect, and too much is unpleasant and, at real excess, harmful.

Bleach also degrades. A jug bought two years ago is meaningfully weaker than the label says, which is why calcium hypochlorite pool shock is the long-term storage answer for a lot of people. It keeps for years and mixes into a disinfectant stock solution when you need it. It also demands more care, because you’re handling a concentrated oxidizer and mixing it wrong is dangerous.

Commercial purification tablets sidestep the arithmetic entirely. They cost more per gallon and they expire, but they are the only option on this list you can use correctly while frightened and in the dark.

Filtration

Filters work by pore size, and pore size is the whole story.

A typical hiking filter rated at 0.2 microns stops bacteria and protozoa. It does not stop viruses, which are smaller than the pores. In North American backcountry that tradeoff is usually acceptable. In a municipal water emergency, where sewage cross-contamination is the realistic scenario, it is not.

Anything sold as a “purifier” rather than a “filter” is claiming virus removal, either through much finer pores, an added chemical stage, or both. That word difference is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy.

Activated carbon, which most filters include, improves taste and captures some chemicals. It does not reliably remove heavy metals, and it does nothing for salt.

Every filter also has a finite life measured in gallons, not months. Push past it and you’re pouring water through a cartridge that has stopped doing its job.

Distillation

The only method here that removes everything: pathogens, chemicals, heavy metals, and salt. Boil water, capture the steam, condense it back to liquid, and what you collect is as clean as water gets.

The cost is speed and fuel. Distilling enough for a family is slow, and it consumes far more energy than boiling the same volume. It’s the right answer for a small quantity of badly contaminated water and the wrong one for daily supply.

A solar still is the no-fuel version. It works, and it produces far less than people expect. Treat it as a supplement, never a plan.

Ultraviolet light

UV scrambles the DNA of anything living, covering bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and it does it in seconds without changing the taste. It needs power and it needs clear water, since cloudiness shields organisms from the light in the same way it shields them from chlorine. It removes nothing dissolved.

Picking one

For a boil water advisory or a main break, boiling is the correct answer and you already own the equipment.

For stored water you’re treating for the long term, chemical disinfection is the standard, with pool shock as the option that outlasts bleach on a shelf.

For water pulled from a rain barrel, a creek or a pool, filtration plus chemical treatment together covers more ground than either alone.

For anything you suspect of chemical or industrial contamination, none of this is sufficient. Use stored water and wait for testing.
