Water Outage: The First Six Hours

What to do in the first six hours of a water outage, in the order that matters. Fill first, ration second, treat third.

Fill every container you own in the first thirty minutes, before pressure drops and before anyone tells you to stop. Water still in the pipes above your fixtures will drain down to the lowest open tap in the house, and that is a few gallons you either catch or lose. After that, stop using water for anything except drinking, cooking and hand washing until you know how long the outage will run.

This is a scaffold sample, not finished editorial. It exists so the route, the layout, the schema and the link registry can be checked end to end. The real article is written in session S5.

The order that matters

Fill first. Ration second. Treat third. Most people invert this, spend the first hour reading about purification, and come out of it with two gallons in the house and a filter they did not need yet.

What people get wrong

Water in the toilet tank is clean, and water in the bowl is not. The water heater holds thirty to fifty gallons and it is the largest container in most houses, but it has to be cooled and the sediment has to settle before it is worth drawing.
