Every guide on this subject gives you a target. Three days minimum, two weeks preferred. None of them tell you where you currently stand.
This does that. Household size, what you have on hand, how you would actually live, and it returns a number of days.
Most people get a lower number than they expected. That reaction is the useful part.
What the number means
Days of water left is your supply divided by your daily need. There is nothing clever in it, and the arithmetic is not where people go wrong. The inputs are.
Gallons on hand means water you can actually reach today. Stored containers, bottled water in the pantry, and the 50 or 60 gallons most houses hold in the water heater and toilet tanks. If you have not counted the hidden water yet, do that first, because for most households it is the majority of the answer.
Daily need is your household size multiplied by a per-person figure, plus pets. Which figure depends on how you would live during the interruption, and the difference between the profiles is larger than the difference between most people’s storage plans.
Why the answer usually disappoints
Three reasons, in order of how often they bite.
The wrong denominator. Plans built on one gallon per person per day assume no flushing, no showers, no dishes. Real households use closer to three until they consciously start rationing, and nobody starts rationing on hour one.
Uncounted people. The household on a normal Tuesday is not the household during a regional emergency. Adult children come home, a neighbor with no supply does not get turned away. Running the number for one more person than you think you have is not pessimism, it is planning.
Water you cannot reach. A 55-gallon drum in a basement belongs to whoever can operate a siphon and carry 40 pounds up a flight of stairs. If that is one person in the household and they are not home, the supply is theoretical.
What to do with a bad number
Three directions, and the number tells you which.
Short by a lot means storage. That is the cheapest and least interesting answer, and for most households a two-week gap closes for under $200.
Short by a little means rationing. Cutting toilet flushing alone often closes it, because flushing is the largest avoidable draw in a house by a wide margin and nothing else on the list competes.
Short with nowhere to put containers means producing water rather than keeping it. Rainwater if you have a roof and it rains, a dehumidifier if your air is humid, and an honest look at whether an atmospheric water generator does anything useful at your local humidity.
What this does not account for
Losses. Containers seep, a lid gets left off, something gets knocked over in the dark. Real supplies deplete slightly faster than arithmetic says.
Contamination. If the reason your tap is off is a chemical event rather than a mechanical one, some of what you counted may not be usable. That is a different problem and no calculator here solves it.
Water quality over time. Self-filled containers need replacing every six months per CDC. Four-year-old water in a garage is inventory rather than supply.
Run it twice
Once for how you would actually live in the first two days, before anyone adjusts. Once for the floor you could hold if the interruption dragged on.
The first number tells you what to store. The second tells you how long you could stretch it. The distance between them is your real margin, and it is more informative than either figure by itself.
